Korean Abstract: 최근 우리나라에서 외화예금이 증가하면서 금융안정에 영향을 미치는 외화예금의 역할에 대한 논의가 증대되고 있다. 외화예금은 금융불안정시 금융시장에 외화유동성을 원활하게 공급함으로써 국가신용도 하락을 완화하는 역할을 수행할 수 있으나, 외화예금의 증가가 자국통화에 대한 신뢰도 약화에 기인한 것이라면 이러한 역할이 나타나지 않을 가능성이 높다. 본 논문은 외화예금이 글로벌 금융위기 등과 같은 해외충격으로부터 신흥국이 받는 부정적인 영향을 완화하는지 여부를 살펴보았다. 본고는 이를 실증적으로 규명하기 위하여 2005년 9월말부터 2013년 9월말까지 17개 주요 신흥국의 매 분기말 자료를 이용하여 동태적패널분석을 실시하였다.

분석결과 외화예금의 해외충격 완화효과는 각국의 경제여건에 따라 다른 것으로 나타났다. 즉 경제여건이 양호한 국가의 경우 외화예금은 해외충격에 따른 국가 신용스프레드 상승을 완화시켜 주지만, 경제여건이 양호하지 않은 국가의 경우 이러한 효과가 나타나지 않았다.

본 논문은 외화예금이 해외충격을 완화하는 효과가 있는지를 국가별 패널자료를 이용하여 최초로 분석한 데 의의가 있다. 이러한 연구 결과는 글로벌 금융위기 이후 해외충격을 완화하기 위한 다양한 정책을 수립하는 신흥국 정책당국에게 시사점을 제공한다.

English Abstract: This paper examines whether foreign currency deposits help mitigate the negative impacts of external shocks coming from major emerging market economies, such as the global financial crisis. Our empirical analysis focuses on 17 emerging market economies with quarterly data covering the period from September 2005 to September 2013, using dynamic panel models.

The results show that the shock-absorbing effects of foreign currency deposits depend upon countries’ economic fundamentals. Specifically, those with strong fundamentals can utilize foreign currency deposits to alleviate the rises in sovereign credit swap spreads caused by external shocks. For countries with weak economic fundamentals, however, the impacts of external shocks on sovereign credit swap spreads increase with the holding of foreign currency deposits.

This is the first paper to analyse the effectiveness of foreign currency deposits in absorbing external shocks using country-level panel data. Its findings can provide useful implications for EME policy authorities in their utilization of various policies to address external shocks.
